Pregnancy & Post-Natal

During pregnancy, numerous physical and physiological changes occur, including weight increase and change in centre of gravity and posture. As the body produces the relaxin hormone, ligaments soften and blood flow increases. All of these things can lead to pressure on joints within in the body including the spine and pelvis.

Safe, gentle osteopathic techniques can help to relax and relieve pressure on your body during pregnancy, as well as improve wellbeing. Many women experience joint aches and back pain during this time and as Osteopaths we take a holistic approach to each patient, which may include health and self-management information, exercise therapy as well as hands on manual therapy catered to your individual needs.

Osteopathy may also help relieve stresses and strains on the body after birth. There may be a number of contributing factors to your symptoms; we evaluate not just the area producing the symptoms, but also any associated areas that may be contributing, including past trauma, environmental factors and family history. We normally say around 6 weeks postpartum is a good time to see us, but it can depend on lots of things. We are more than happy to discuss the best approach to your care before you book an appointment so please give us a call.

Osteopaths are regulated primary healthcare practitioners and undergraduate training includes pre and post-natal women. Whilst all our osteopaths work with this group of patients, Laura has a particular interest in women’s health, and has further developed her skills by undertaking postgraduate training.

Osteopaths are trained to screen for medical conditions. If the cause of your joint aches and pains is not musculoskeletal, you may need to be referred to another healthcare practitioner.

Please contact us if you are pregnant as we will advise the best time for you to come in. It may vary for a number of personal reasons, and also on what treatment you’d like to have. If you give us a call, we can advise on your individual situation and find the best practitioner and treatment for you.
