Sports Injuries

Osteopathy can be very effective in managing and preventing sports injuries. As osteopaths we use a holistic approach to diagnose, treat and prevent injuries with the aim to improve overall function and promote the bodies natural healing processes.

Common sports injury complaints include:

  • Muscle strains and tears – Overstretched or torn muscles often caused by overuse, improper technique, or sudden movements.
  • Ligament sprains and tears –  Overstretched ligaments often caused by overuse, improper technique, or sudden movements.
  • Tendonitis – Inflammation of tendons due to repetitive stress or overuse.
  • Joint Injuries – Including dislocations, subluxations, and cartilage damage.
  • Back and Neck Pain – Resulting from improper lifting techniques, impact injuries, or repetitive use.
  • Overuse Injuries – Such as shin splints, runner’s knee, stress fractures and back pain.

How can osteopathy help?

At your appointment, your therapist will perform a thorough assessment to diagnose your injury, which includes a detailed case history and physical examination. By looking at the whole body, and not just the injured part, we aim to determine the root cause of your injury by looking at muscle weakness, tightness and any joint restrictions also. By addressing the underlying causes and promoting optimal function, osteopathy can help athletes recover faster, prevent future injuries, and enhance their overall performance.

Osteopaths use gentle manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and stretching to help with pain relief, promote healing, and prevent further injury. By looking at your posture and gait, areas of weakness and patterns that could lead to injury can be addressed.

Specific exercise to help strengthen muscles and improve flexibility are often prescribed by our therapists to address the specific needs of the patient and help you to return to sport safely.

Osteopaths are trained to screen for medical conditions. If the cause of your sports injury pain is not musculoskeletal, you may need to be referred to another healthcare practitioner.

Here at Carshalton all our therapists treat sports injuries, but some have specialist interest in particular injury or sports, so check out their profiles for more details or give us a call/email for more information and to find someone most suited to you.
